I traveled far and wide this past weekend, in search of glory in warmer weather. It’s funny how sometimes we find things that we aren’t really looking for, and maybe it’s better that way.
The community of people that make up these events never ceases to amaze me. The volunteers and judges and climbers combine to create a great atmosphere for people to grow and learn in.
Here’s 10 things I learned this weekend:
- State Parks are prime real estate for traveling cheaply while still getting the comforts of a hot shower and comfy restroom. (25 bucks a night for the basic stuff).
- Sometimes a dump trailer is a better investment than a chipper.
- Southern Hospitality is a real thing.
- BBQ is best buffet style.
- Always carry a compass.
- Don’t wait until you’re fuel light comes on to look for gas.
- Everyone has a wonderful story to tell.
- Winning isn’t everything, but being a competitor is.
- When people give you a compliment, say thank you, regardless of how your day is going.
- Take a lot of pictures.
As an out-of-stater, I can say that the Southern Chapter TCC was one of the best I’ve ever traveled to. A special thanks to Billy Kelly and Scott Winningham, and all of the countless and selfless volunteers and sponsors who made this event what it was.
Also to Nich Maidment (and crew), Jeremy Williams, Tobias Wygand, Chris Coates (as always), Jeff Inman, Jason Diehl, Marty Robinson, Tony Brown, Shem Kendrick, Scotty Olson, Timothy Green, Bob Lubbers and anyone who I probably talked their ear off and am just forgetting at the moment, thanks for opening up and sharing in the weekend with me. I really enjoyed your company and your knowledge.
Rumor has it that next year, we may be climbing in Graceland!
